Blog

Our photos have a ‘make-over’!

We recently made the very sensible decision to update some of our old and outdated product images. When looking through the front end of our website, we realised that many of the images did not really show the product very well nor did they show the specific products in all their glory!

To be honest, it had been on our minds for a considerable amount of time, but it has always taken a back seat as we are always so busy with either maintaining the woodlands, creating orders or doing the general admin tasks.

So, we made the decision to pick a few of our more standard items that we sell regularly and update their images to ones we felt would reflect the product better – with gallery images to show how the product could be used by our customers.

Being a small business in West Wales ourselves, we always strive to support other local businesses too. So when local photographer and film maker Jacob Martin, who is just starting up a business came onto our radar, we jumped at the opportunity to involve him in our plans!

Having invited Jacob around in advance of the photoshoot to see our products and discuss how we wanted the images to look and feel, we set a date and pulled together props such as cakes, cupcakes and floral displays. To be honest, we love working with other local businesses – we live in such a rural area of Wales that supporting and networking with each other helps us to offer a truly bespoke service, whilst getting the best out of those we work with.

We did the photoshoot on a cool sunny evening and chose the location to be on the edge of one of our fields near a pond – a perfect green backdrop for our wood products! We actually surprised ourselves and were quite organised with a photo order list and managed to get through the products at quite a rapid rate. We have to say we are delighted with the results!

We have taken care to ensure that the products are shown on their ‘own’ so customers can see what the product is like – we have also taken images that accompany the product, showing how it can be used by customers with either cakes on, flowers, table numbers etc. It’s amazing how many uses we could find for a simple wood slice! We find that customers love them for smaller cake displays, cheeseboards, floral displays, centrepieces, cupcake stands and many more ways too!

The images taken have now replaced most of the outdated images that used to adorn the website and we have also updated our Etsy Shop with new images too. We share much of our work including the bespoke personalised items on both Pinterest and Instagram as well as on our own Facebook page. We thought we’d share some of the images with you here on our blog too – what better way to make wood come ‘alive’ than adding a cake and some flowers!

Flowers on wood – a naturally perfect marriage!

When planning a wedding, there are so many things to consider from the venue and catering right down to what shoes to wear!
Flowers play such an important role at a wedding and, quite rightly, should take centre stage with their striking beauty and gentle fragrance.
We have been extremely lucky to have our wood products used as part of floral displays at many weddings over the years. It always amazes us at how many different ways flowers can be displayed and with such amazing themes, awash with colours, that undoubtedly catch the eye.
We felt that it was only right to share some recent images of floral displays from weddings in 2016. It is always such a delight for us here at M H Woodland to see our wood products in use whether it be for centrepieces, table settings or for cakes. Seeing our products in their final setting of a wedding brings them alive and we feel honoured that our wood, from our own woodland here in Wales can be part of so many stunning displays!
I am sure you will agree it’s a perfect natural marriage to use wood with floral displays. Nature at its very best. With colours that literally ‘pop’ as seen with these bright oranges, pinks and purples of the Pumpkin floral display. Wood works well with any colour – the beautiful tones of white and green perfectly compliment each other and look very much at home on a wood slice.
We enjoy working with other businesses in the wedding industry and have worked with some amazingly talented florists in the past, helping them to create stunning displays for weddings, birthdays and competitions!
The photos shown in this post were kindly provided by the super talented Alison White of Alison White Wedding Flowers based in Leaden Roding, Essex. Alison offers a friendly personal service for all wedding and event flowers. We are truly grateful to her for enabling us to share these images – we think you’ll agree they are simply stunning and are a great example of how you can use wood in a floral display!

Quirky shaped slices and platters

We love unusual shaped wood, the quirkier the better as far as we are concerned, so we are delighted to have produced exactly that – an array of unusual shaped wood slices and wood platters. They come in all shapes and sizes to suit any use from a cake stand, cheese platter to centrepiece for flowers, vases, candles etc.

All of these items have been planed and sanded to a super smooth finish and are lovely to touch! All come with bark intact too!

A perfect way to have a rustic display at your event. We loved them so much we have kept one back for our own dinning room table!

We also have an etsy site – check it out as we sometimes have differing cake stands on there to this site – our stands are often unique, both our main site and the etsy site can have different items on offer!!

What a colourful Autumn it is!

What a gorgeous colourful Autumn we are having here in West Wales with leaves finally turning golden and falling from the trees to leave a carpet of colour for us to walk on! Our woodland is typically an ‘ancient woodland’. In the UK an ‘ancient woodland’ is a woodland that has existed since 1600 or before! Pre 1600 planting new woodlands was very uncommon and as such, the ‘ancient woodland’ is more likely to have developed in a more natural way with lots of ‘regeneration’ – mother trees throwing off seedlings, which have naturally grown into large trees – self seeding themselves as time passes by!

Our own woodland is magically diverse and supports many species of flora and fauna. We have many types of moss growing on stones and trees, we have bracken, ferns and wild flowers too. All of this, including the wildlife has its own little eco-system and we are supporting this by creating habitat piles, clearing undergrowth to support the regrowth of flowers such as bluebells and trees, whilst planting up new trees that are indigenous to our own ‘ancient woodland’.

Over the past couple of years we have planted around 250 new trees and have also started coppicing some of the Hazel that grows so abundantly in our woodland. We use the Hazel that has been coppiced for some of our smaller woodland products that we produce. We remove old Hazel stems and put them through a slow drying process (remove the moss too!) – then we process the drier wood into products for the website. By coppicing, we are supporting the re-growth of the Hazel. I will do a seperate blog completely dedicated to coppicing as it is such a large part of our work here at M H Woodland. But, to give readers an idea, coppicing is a traditional method of woodland management that allows the tree to make new growth from the stump roots. Already some of the wood we coppiced here a couple of years ago have grown 15 feet high!

I have added a collage of photos I took this month showing the new plantings from this spring, and some from last spring – you can just see the tree guards we use to protect the trees for their first few years around the base of the tree! I have also added a collage of the autumnal colours that are so evident at this time of year! The blackberries were, of course, delicious!

Photo Gallery – everything with wood!

We have set up a new product photo gallery with lots of amazing photos –  many of these have been kindly sent in by customers who have used our wood products to display cakes at their own events. We LOVE having photos sent to us by customers whether it be a cake display, candles or centrepieces. For us, it enables us to see our products in their fully glory! Why not send us your photos – we would love to share them too!

We have to say – we are very impressed with the creativity of our customers and their cake making skills too! Naked cakes seem to be very popular and rightly so – they look absolutely stunning! Our thanks go to the amazing Claire at ‘Cake Carousel’ (www.cake-carousel.co.uk) for letting us use so many of her photos on our gallery and of course, to all the kind customers who have sent in their photos!

Goodbye 2015 – what a creative year it was!

As we say goodbye to 2015 and hello to 2016 we would like to thank all our customers for their orders and support – we had some very interesting and unusual bespoke requests that were great fun to work on – from cake makers, brides and restaurant chefs! We look forward to this coming year and hope we have just as many requests from creative customers who love what we create here as much as we do!!

Rustic, Creative, Bespoke, Quirky, Unusual are all words we have used time and again in describing what we do – we like to take inspiration from the natural shape of the wood and adore some of the products we list that are that little bit more unusual. We continue to expand our stock list and range of products and are always open to requests or ideas. Last year saw us produce our first ‘cake pop’ stand for use at the National Wedding Fayre. We are thinking of adding these to our standard stock for this year – so if you have any ideas or requests, we’d love to hear from you.

Behind the scene here at M H Woodland!

We thought you might like a look behind the scene…people often think our products are ‘off the shelf’ !! This is far from the truth as we manage our own woodland here in Wales from which we produce the majority of our products.

We plant new trees every year and this year over 100 mixed hardwood trees were planted on ground that was cleared of bramble and scrub! We plant tree species that are already in existence in our ancient woodland namely Oak, Ash, Rowan and Hazel.

Much of our smaller produce is made from Hazel. We have a rotational management programme in place and coppice our Hazel in the winter months to encourage new growth. It’s amazing how much growth these trees can put on each year!

Over 90% of our trees are covered in moss, so a major part of the production process sees us cleaning this off before production can really start. It’s a tedious task but well worth the finish as otherwise the bark would be hidden!

Much of our larger wood comes from fallen or dying Ash trees. The woodland had not been managed properly before we arrived and so we have put management plans into process by clearing away dead and fallen trees, clearing undergrowth and identifying new areas for planting.

We cut the wood ourselves…this is usually done on site and makes it far easier to haul it out of the woodland. Much of our woodland is on very steep slopes at the bottom of a valley with a small river running through one side of it. For this reason we tend to use little in the way of machinery as it would be inaccessible on such a terrain as ours.

Our production is very small scale and bespoke~ we bring the cut wood back to our workshop and put it into its first drying process. This can take quite a long time depending on the time of the year. It then goes into its second drying stage before we clean the wood and prepare it for whatever it is going to be made into. Blanks are then cut and stored for further drying time and then the wood goes into the final production before being listed on the website.

Sometimes we offer wood stands that are still wet or as we call them ‘green’. This means they still contain a fair bit of moisture. This only tends to happen when we are short of dryer stock! We always list these wetter slices with the information in the description section so customers can make an informed choice when buying. Wetter wood stock has to be cared for very carefully as it has a tendency to crack and split if it dries out too quickly so we always advise customers to read the FAQ section of the website and we also send out wood care instructions with every order!

We love what we do…we hope you enjoy our products and this little look behind the scenes at how we produce products for your enjoyment! If ever you have a question about what we do here, please drop us a line on the contact form.image

M H Woodland

The Old Chapel Weddings website has had some recent changes.

M H Woodland, the company that grows and produces the wood items has now taken over the website.

M H Woodland has its own 10 acre ancient woodland in Pembrokeshire, South-West Wales and produces items from its own woodland on site.

Most of the small wood items are made from coppiced Hazel which is helping to bring the previously neglected woodland back into management whilst helping to restore the ancient woodland flora and fauna.

We are delighted to have a website from which we can sell our products directly to customers..
